6ixtes and Lise Rathonie, an artist specializing in metal enameling, had the privilege of collaborating with students from Prépamax – Campus Versailles. Together, they explored the art of enameling through the lens of light switch design… The result is as refined as it is electrifying!

A creative collaboration between 6ixtes and Prépamax – Campus Versailles

The art of enameling—an ancient and demanding craft—holds a prominent place at Campus Versailles. Through a unique collaboration involving the company 6ixtes, Lise Rathonie, and students from the Prépamax program, the students were able to apply their skills by creating enameled light switch plates. This intensive introduction allowed them to discover exceptional craftsmanship and put their creativity to the test under tight time constraints. Here is a look back at this enriching and electrifying experience!

An immersion in the art of enameling

Before setting out to design their light switches, the students first familiarized themselves with the basics of enameling. They experimented with the technique by creating tiles featuring free-form designs—an initial exercise that allowed them to understand how materials and colors react during firing. This practice was essential for gaining the necessary proficiency before tackling a more structured project.

From raw material to the creation of a switch

The students then immersed themselves in the design phase. They worked with copper for the *cloisonné* partitioning, used silver leaf to intensify the colors, and created pen-and-ink drawings to add delicacy and precision to their patterns. Each piece was then fired at 800°C—a crucial step that reveals the full brilliance and depth of the enamels. Despite the limited time available, they demonstrated rigor and ingenuity in bringing their creations to life.

A presentation to professionals

This collaboration culminated in a presentation to the Campus Versailles team and representatives from the company 6ixtes. The students had the opportunity to showcase their work and explain their creative process—a rewarding experience that allowed them to gauge the skills they had acquired and engage with industry professionals.

This immersive experience not only introduced the students to the delicate art of enameling but also demonstrated the importance of craftsmanship and design in the world of everyday objects. It was an inspiring collaboration that undoubtedly sparked new vocational interests!
